Bjorn Wiinblad Guide

Are you among those, who like Bjorn Wiinblad's art, but have difficulty figuring out the many different types of Bjorn Wiinblad items, then read on.
Bjorn Wiinblad's life motif was always "to make people happy" and he got the nickname "The happy son of nature".
He had a deep love for oriental art, which was reflected in his personal style. Bjorn Wiinblad had an original talent.
Bjorn Wiinblad was born on 20th September 1918 in Copenhagen, Denmark, and died 6th June 2006. He started as an apprentice typographer and attended the technical school at Frederiksberg 1936-1939. Then he attended the art academy under Aksel Jorgensen in the period from 1940-1943.
He was educated by Lars Syberg in Taastrup and from 1946 he was an artist at Nymolle Fayence Factory, where many items were produced from Bjorn Wiinblad's drawings.

Bjorn Wiinblad and Nymolle

From 1946 Bjorn Wiinblad worked as an artist at Nymolle Fayence Factory, where his international career started. At Nymolle Bjorn Wiinblad created his characteristic series in red, black and green.
As an example the monthly plates can be mentioned, they are also known as butterboards. Furthermore there are seasonal plates in different sizes and many decorative plates, vases, flower pots, mugs, candleholder etc. in his characteristic style.
Many of the items produced at Nymolle, where made in large numbers and you can still be lucky to find these at reasonable prices. - It must be mentioned that these items have become so popular that they are becoming difficult to find.

Bjorn Wiinblad and Rosenthal (Germany)

For many years Bjorn Wiinblad collaborated with the large German glass and porcelain producer Rosenthal. Rosenthal is known for its innovative quality products and for seeking new paths and launching atypical products with an often bold choice in colours and shapes that catch you despite their unique expression.
The collaboration between Bjorn Wiinblad and Rosenthal was a great success. Bjorn Wiinblad had great freedom in creating and developing. He made many plate series in porcelain and glass, as well as dinnerware and decorations. Most notably he designed the dinnerware for the 2500th anniversary of the Persian shahdom.
Below you can see different examples of things produced at Rosenthal in Germany (Notice the large hurricane candleholders that are also designed by Bjorn Wiinblad and are now produced at Rosendahl in Denmark). Find Hurricane Candleholders here.

Bjorn Wiinblad Plate series etc. from Rosenthal
Normally the sales prices of Rosenthal products were far higher than those from Nymolle. Today it is supply and demand that sets the price as none are still in production. Below we have some examples of plates that we sell at much lower prices today than when they were issued in the 1970's. - This is due to us having bought up remaining lots.

Bjorn Wiinblad's Workshop (Kgs Lyngby)

Bjorn Wiinblad's own workshop in Kgs. Lyngby opened in 1952 and closed around 2010 a few years after the death of Bjorn Wiinblad (6th June 2006). The items made here were often hand painted and more artistic than the factory produced works that Bjorn Wiinblad made for Nymolle and Rosenthal.
At his own workshop he produced waterfontains and tiles as well as a huge production of figurines, vases, candleholders and dishes etc. - These items were produced and sold in much smaller number and were typically much more expensive. - Many probably know his annual figurines that had a sales price of about EUR 520 per piece in 2008. We sell these items really fast and at the moment we have hardly any of the items in stock!

Bjorn Wiinblad Denmark

After the death of Bjorn Wiinblad Rosendahl in Denmark (Not to be confused with Rosenthal from Germany) bought the rights to parts of Bjorn Wiinblad's design. - These are marketed under the name Bjørn Wiinblad Denmark today. Bjørn Wiinblad Denmark produces a large range of decorative items. Below you can see examples of these products.

Learn to spot the difference between 1st and 2nd quality

I am often asked about the difference between 1st and 2nd quality of Royal Copenhagen and Bing & Grondahl. This has prompted me to write a bit about it. Basically it is about an evaluation of the porcelain made in the factory after production. The finished porcelain was lookes over to see if they live up to the quality demands of the factory. Those that were deemed 2nd quality, where then sold at a lower price than 1st quality. Today only dinner service is sold as 2nd quality in factory sales, but the improved technique for burning the porcelain means that all the yearly cllector's items are sold as 1st quality now. In the past a large part of the production could be of a quality that did not meet the quality demand, which made it necessary to sell it as 2nd quality. However one must remember that the evaluation was made by people, so the evaluation of the porcelain could vary a lot, meaning that there was great difference in when figurines and plates were ju...

The Porcelain Factory Désirée - Svend Jensen - Old Copenhagen Blue

The porcelain factory Désirée , also called Old Copenhagen Blue and Svend Jensen abroad, was once among the best porcelain manufacturers in Denmark. The Désirée name has been used in different contexts over the years and was perhaps best known by the labels of the tableware series they produced. Popular dinnerware by Désirée The logo of Désirée Denmark Svend Jensen Old Copenhagen Blue Amongst the dinnerware which was produced by Désirée was Selandia . Selandia was the first dinnerware the porcelain factory Désirée made. Later, when it became popular to make stoneware and more robust dinnerware, came the series Thule , Diskos , Vesterhav and Jutlandia to be included in the range. Since the porcelain factory became more successful in the 1970s, 80s and 90s several popular dinnerware such as Polar , Mistletoe , Springtime and Scandinavia were introduced. All decorated and hand painted using the underglaze technique. Brief history behind Désirée The porcelain factory ...

Beautiful 2017 Easter eggs from Royal Copenhagen

The time has arrived, when Royal Copenhagen again issues its popular series of porcelain Easter eggs. The older years of the Easter eggs are hard to find and increase markedly in price as a collector's market has been established. Thus I recommend that you buy now, as the Easter eggs from last year, where sold out very quickly. Like in prior years the motifs are beautiful and delightful flowers, butterflies and birds. The style of the motifs are kept in the clear and pure style that brings the thoughts back to botanical and zoological encyclopedias. See all Royal Copenhagen Easter eggs 2017 here! Royal Copenhagen Easter eggs work well set alongside the flowers of spring. On the pictures above you see a setup together with the  Bing & Grondahl Easter plates  that with right in with their spring motifs. The shown plate is  Easter 1917 .
