Dishwasher
How does your porcelain tableware fare in the dishwasher? Dinnerware that is underglazed like the white or blue painted was no trouble going into the dishwasher. That is White Fluted, Blue Fluted, Blue Flower, Empire, Mega, the Hans Christian Andersen service etc. It goes for any dinner wervice with the decoration beneather the glazing. Even newer dinner services with in-glaze decoration like flora can go into the dishwasher.
Faience tableware like Blue Edge can go into the dishwasher, too.
Christmas plates and mother's day plates from Royal Copenhagen, Bing & Grondahl and Desirée are all underglaze porcelain and can be washed in the dishwasher. So do not be afraid to use your Christmas plates as tableware. They are well-suited for it.
If your porcelain service has overglaze decoration or golden edge, then the decoration og edge will be slowly washed of by the dishwasher, so I do not recommend using a dishwasher.
Microwave Oven
Can your porcelain be used in the microwave oven? Both porcelain and faience is suitable for the microwave, thus nothing prevents you from using it. Most Royal Copenhagen dinnerware made today can be used in the microwave oven.
Porcelain services not suitable for microwave ovens are any with golden edge or other metal paints as these are damaged when put in the microwave oven. I thus strongly recommend against using any metalpainted porcelain service in the microwave oven.
Christmas plates and Christmas cups from Royal Copenhagen and Desirée can also be used in the microwave oven, so they are also well-suited in this respect.
Normal Oven
Can the porcelain take heating in a normal oven? Lastly I will write about the normal oven to finish it all of. If you want to use your porcelain in a normal oven, you should make sure that the heating is very gradual as large changes in temperature will break the porcelain.
This also applies when you remove the porcelain from the oven. It must be allowed to cool slowly and should never be drenced in cold water, while it is still hot as it will break the porcelain.
Porcelain should not be used in a convection oven.
As you can read there is no reason not to use the old decorated white and blue porcelain service for daily use, as they are able to be put in both the dishwasher and the microwave oven. You just need to be aware that it cannot have golden edges or overglaze paint. If that is the case you will have the do the dishes. But otherwise there is no reason not to use the old porcelain tableware like you would any other and set a very nice table for daily use.
